Differences between Vietnamese New Year and Chinese New Year

Vietnamese New Year is called "Tết", and its origin is closely related to China. Vietnam was called Annan in ancient times, and its culture is deeply influenced by Chinese civilization. Many customs of Vietnamese New Year (Tết Nguyên Đán) were introduced from China and formed after localization.

There are some differences between Vietnamese New Year (Tết Nguyên Đán) and Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) in terms of celebration methods, food and activities.

Celebration methods
1. Celebration time: Vietnamese New Year (Tết Nguyên Đán) is usually celebrated on the first day of the Lunar New Year, that is, the first day of the first lunar month. It is the same as the Chinese Spring Festival, but the specific date may be different due to differences in the lunar calendar.

2. During the Vietnamese New Year (Tết Nguyên Đán), people will carry out a series of celebrations, including inserting peach and plum blossoms, sending the Kitchen God, cleaning, eating New Year's Eve dinner, staying up late, pasting couplets, etc. During the Chinese New Year, in addition to cleaning, eating New Year's Eve dinner, staying up late, and pasting couplets, red lanterns and paper-cut decorations are hung.

Food
1. New Year's Eve dinner: During the Chinese New Year, fish is usually served for the New Year's Eve dinner, which means "abundance every year". During the Vietnamese New Year (Tết Nguyên Đán), pig heads or chickens are prepared for the New Year's Eve dinner, and there is no custom of eating fish.
2. Special foods: Special foods of the Vietnamese New Year (Tết Nguyên Đán) include New Year Zong, a square-shaped rice dumpling made of 200 grams of glutinous rice, with pork and mung bean paste in the middle, symbolizing vitality and harvest.

Many festival customs in Vietnam originated from China, especially New Year Tết Nguyên Đán. The customs of Tết Nguyên Đán in Vietnam are very similar to those in China, but some details have been adjusted to suit the country's habits.
